Athletics play a central part to life in Moncton. And the city has built various venues to support that priority. The CN Sportsplex is a major recreational facility built on the former property where the Canadian National Railway shops were.
For much of the 20th century, Moncton and CN were synonymous in the minds of its citizens. Everyone had a family member that worked in the shops on the city's west side. Moncton's history is inextricably linked with CN, as the company is responsible for the city’s economic growth and development through most of the 1900's.
When Moncton was no longer the Eastern Canadian headquarters, the CN property sat idle until 1997, when the 282 acre site became part of an award-winning Brownfield redevelopment project.
A significant part of Moncton's history was reborn in a business and technology park (Emmerson Park) and the CN Sportsplex, home to four ice pads (called the Tim Hortons 4Ice Centre), ten baseball fields, and six soccer fields dedicated to the youth of the city.
An indoor air supported multi-use building (the Dundee Sports Dome) has also been constructed at the Sportsplex. This building is large enough to allow for year round football, soccer and golf activities. Go to 275 Millennium Boulevard.
