You might think Moncton’s climate to be maritime-like,
because it’s near the Bay of Fundy and the Northumberland
Strait. However the climate is mostly continental, especially
during the summer and winter seasons.
Winter days in Moncton are cold - but they’re usually sunny!
There are several cold snaps throughout the winter with temperatures
falling to the range of 5 to -13F/ -15 to -25C. Major snowfalls
often result from nor'easter ocean storms moving up the east coast
of North America from the southern United States.
Large amounts of precipitation can result from the counterclockwise
rotation of these storms picking up moisture from the Atlantic
Ocean and dumping it on southeastern New Brunswick as the storms
pass by to the south and east. First snowfalls take place by mid-November.
Spring doesn’t come early here, as it takes until the end
of March that daytime temps are above freezing.
Summers are usually comfortable and not too hot, with daytime
highs usually reaching the mid to high 68 F/20 C. Temperatures
in the low to mid 80’s F/30's C occur 6-10 times per year.
Rainfall is modest and periods of drought are not uncommon.
